To get a driving licence, first decide:

1.
Which vehicles will you drive?

Vehicles are divided into categories, which are specified on the driving licence. If you want to drive a passenger car, you need a category B driving licence. Each category has its own rules, e.g. minimum age limit (details).

At Liikluslab you can study in English for category B. In Estonian and Russian you can study for all the other categories.

2.Do you prefer classroom studies or an online driving school?

To get a driving licence, you need to go to a driving school and pass theory and driving tests. You can learn theory in two ways - by attending classroom lectures or by studying on your own at online driving school.

Online studies

Online driving school

Take a theory course online, learning independently at your own pace. Liikluslab's Online driving school ensures:

On average 19% better test results
The quality of the e-courses is ensured by Liikluslab experts
Study wherever and whenever you want
If you have questions, you can ask them to the teacher in the online environment
Keep in mind that some people lack the motivation to learn independently
Classroom studies

Classroom studies

You will attend lectures at a driving school run by a theory teacher. The lectures may last for several months.

Attend lectures and study in a group
Classes are held on a fixed schedule
You can start learning right away before registering for a driving school. For this purpose use Study in English’.
Keep in mind that the quality of the course depends on the teacher
Keep in mind that you will be left without knowledge if you miss a class

3.Which driving school will you choose?

Choosing a driving school is very important - a good one teaches well and is supportive, while a mediocre one can take away any motivation. Liikluslab is a quality brand in driver training and here you can find the driving schools that use our learning materials.

What steps do you need to go through to obtain a driving licence?

Once you've chosen a driving school, the exciting road to a driving licence begins.

  • Registration for driving school

First, you have to choose a driving school and enrol on a course. You can do this conveniently here. You don't need to pay at this step yet. You will be contacted by the driving school, you can ask any further questions and only then you will receive a prepayment invoice.

  • Medical certificate

You can start your studies in driving school after you have obtained a medical certificate for drivers. To get a certificate, contact your family doctor or a health centre. Find out more about where and how to get a health check.

  • Registration at the Transport Administration

Once you have made the prepayment, the driving school will register you as a student at the Transport Administration and issue you with a learner’s form (a document that allows you to take driving lessons).

Many driving schools are using electronic learner’s forms provided by Liikluslab instead of outdated paper forms. They are always with you on your smartphone, and you can conveniently track your progress and sign up for driving lessons.

  • Theory course

Your studies at driving school start with traffic theory, where you’ll learn the traffic rules and other curriculum topics. You will study theory either in classroom lectures or at online driving school.

If you’ve opted for classroom studies, you don't have to wait for the first lecture and you can start learning on your own, for example using ‘Study in English’ subscription. If you have chosen the online driving school, access to the e-course will be granted by the driving school.

  • Driving lessons

Once the first theory topics are covered, the driving training starts. The number of driving lessons depends on the category. You can conveniently book your driving lessons in the Liikluslab’s online environment or directly with a driving instructor.

  • Initial training differences

When you go to driving school for the first time (meaning for initial training), the curriculum will include additional topics. For example, category B students must pass the night-time driving course, the slippery driving course and the first aid course, however, AM category students only have to pass the first aid course. These courses are organised by your driving school.

  • Exams at driving school

Your studies at driving school end with the theory and driving tests. Regardless of whether you studied theory in a classroom or at online driving school, the theory test is taken in the Liikluslab’s online environment. It will consist of the same test questions that you solved during your studies. The driving test will follow the same rules as the one at the Transport Administration.

Once you have passed the tests, the driving school will issue you with a so-called ‘driving school certificate’ and forward it’s details to the Transport Administration.

  • Exams at the Transport Administration

You can take the state theory test after you have passed the theory test at driving school. Test rules depend on the category (details). Test questions have been prepared by our specialists (details) and are similar to the questions, which you studied at Liikluslab.

You can register for the state driving test once the driving school has sent the details of your driving school certificate to the Transport Administration. The rules for the driving test also depend on the category (details).

  • Getting a driving licence

You will get the right to drive on the day you pass the driving test at the Transport Administration, once the examiner has added your details to the traffic registry. Depending on the workload, s/he may do this either immediately after the test or at the latest by the end of the test day. You will receive your driving licence within a few working days, either by post or at the service bureau of the Transport Administration.

You can find out more about driving schools, exams and getting your driving licence in our Driver Education ABC.
